In 2009, Tel Aviv celebrated its official centennial.
For both Israeli citizens and visiting tourists, Tel Aviv is the unofficial capital of Israel, being the center of its nightlife, culture, culinary and urban tourism.
Einat and Tamar were chosen to present their work, alongside 99 other designers, as a part of the project "And Yet, There's Something About It". The project is inspired by the poetry of Natan Alterman, as a part of Tel Aviv's 100th anniversary celebration. We chose to address the sewage manhole covers as a kind of notarial stamp, bearing the symbol of the city, as well as the symbolic scepter of its construction, foundation and ongoing development.
It is an object we all step on every day, and most of us ignore it. It has become part of the road each Tel Aviv resident or visitor takes, as he walks the city streets on his way home, to work, or out with friends. We found beauty and an aesthetic in these metal covers, and decided to take this everyday object and turn it into a symbol, a jewel.
These manhole covers tell the story of Tel Aviv's development over the years, the changes it had undergone, and all that lies hidden within it. We wanted to take the urban 'unaesthetic' Tel Aviv and metamorphose the way we perceive it, using appearance and adaptation.
The manhole covers are intended to be worn as jewelry on clothing, to symbolize a city where anything is possible, a city that went through a lot, and yet, there's something about it.
